Index last updated 9 Mar 2013

The LDS Church has been producing a fantastic set of short videos depicting stories from the New Testament, found at BibleVideos.org. The site’s index of videos, however, places them in the order they have been posted on the site, not the order the stories are recorded in the scriptures, nor the order the events occurred chronologically. I don’t know why; I hope they add such an index soon. Until then, here is a table of all the videos currently up, placed in roughly chronological order (see below the table for how I arrived at the order). I will try to update this post periodically, to keep up as new videos are posted. I have not watched all the videos, so if I’ve made any mistakes in the sequence, please let me know in the comments section.
Italicized titles are composite videos—montages that span multiple scripture stories.

The Acts of the Apostles stories can simply be put in scripture reference order. However, any combination of passages from the four gospels is going to be notoriously difficult to put in chronological order. The Nativity and Easter week sections are straightforward enough, but everything in between is a jumbled mess that has occupied literally millions of pages of scholarship.

To keep it simple, I ordered the vignettes according to scripture reference first, then divided them into Early Ministry and Later Ministry. The dividing point is roughly based on the point at which Christ went from public teaching to more private teaching, where he commissions his apostles and begins to teach them more explicitly about his pending death. For more information on this basic structure, see this article by one Dennis Bratcher, which I found to be a good overview of the basic shape of the gospel accounts.

It’s a pretty rough order right now. As the Church adds more videos, I may have to do more research, or else cheat and just use scripture reference order. We’ll see.
